Dry Casting Report July 2004

I arrived at Yokine Reserve a little after 7:00 am to miserable drizzle falling and the sight of two forlorn figures drudging around the wet grass arena.

Yes, Bob and TerryW were there well before me and had set about setting the courts and grounds up as usual without any fuss or bother. We, the casters, owe these two 'gentlemen' a huge debt of gratitude. Without their efforts, our day would just not start or run on time.

Gilders turned up next, and with a little instruction, was able to roll the die to select the relevant distances for the accuracy. Group 3 for the seniors, group 4 for the veterans, and group 2 for the single-handed. No sooner was the die rolled, then Willow had the court ready to go.

I had a funny feeling something wasn't quite right, then I realized what it was. Jimmy wasn't there. Our devote veteran Jimmy Strong had failed to turn up for the first time that I can remember in a very long time.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

Competition got under way with nine seniors hitting off on accuracy, seven veterans, three ladies and a junior on distance. Two other members also attended and assisted with the scoring and cooking at the end, but did not compete. Dean and Andrew get a big thank you.

By the time we got started, the skies had cleared, but there was a slight breeze drifting our accuracy sinkers about a metre to the right out at the longest distance. Once again, Gary was impeccable with a good score of 153. Not to be outdone, Trevor put his hand up in the veterans, taking out the accuracy section with an impressive 147. I think he told me his score about 227 times while we were talking after the competition. Well done Trevor.

As the day progressed, the wind changed direction and strength somewhat. As can be seen by the score sheet nearby, I managed to throw 54 gram further than 112 gram in distance. A little unusual in most circumstances.

At the conclusion of normal competition, our first single-handed open was held, with seven members electing to participate, including our two first timers. Longest cast was impressive 89 metres.

Upon request from the competitors, next months competition will revert back to a 8:30 am start. So, make sure you reset your alarm clocks for the earlier time.

This report concludes my time as Dry Casting Officer for the year. I wish the incumbent all the best and may he/she be blessed with a greater amount of patience than I. Chas Riegert DCO
