Mandurah 500 Fishing Field Day - January 2003.

January's field day was planned to coincide with the AAA run Sunsmart Mandurah 500 family fishing promotion. 17 club members signed on for both competitions for what promised to be some good fishing close to home.

Going on the weather that had preceded the event, an afternoon sea breeze and a balmy evening was expected. Wrong, one should never assume especially when it comes to the weather. The Saturday started out with some cloud cover and a gentle westerly breeze. By late afternoon it had swung around to the south-west ahead of a cold front with the wind picking up to about 30 knots during the evening, accompanied by a few rain squalls. As the swell increased so did the amount of floating weed which turned the fishing into hard work.

As would be expected, with less than perfect weather conditions, not many fish were weighed-in in either the open competition or for the club's field day.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

Club members were spread out from Preston beach to Madora Bay with the majority opting for the beach to the south of Mandurah, this is where most of the success was had for the weekend. George, Vix and I fished White Hills and managed a few good fish. George landed seven tailor, the heaviest around 750 grams along with a bag full of herring.

Vix was rewarded with some herring and just one good size tailor, big enough though to take out the ladies tailor section of the Sunsmart Mandurah 500 competition. Other tailor catches came from John Romano, Tony D'Alonzo, myself and mini junior Andrew Stoeckel.

Another memorable catch of the day was a bag of fourteen plump skippy by Tony D'Alonzo, one of which earned him first prize in the open Skipjack Trevally section.

Only a few hardy souls fished the morning of the weigh in, so most people were in attendance at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club when the Sunsmart presentations commenced. The club's facilities were superb and along with a large sun shade provided by AAA made the proceedings very comfortable. The winners of each section took home a range of great prizes, won in some cases by less than average size fish.

The weather may not have been on our side for this field day but it sure beats looking at that list on the fridge which contains more jobs than I care to contemplate.

Hope to see you on the beach next time. Malcolm Harris, Field Day Officer.
